Do you ever miss home?

Though not the first time I have been asked that very question, this time I decided to ponder a little before I answered. I could tell that this camper especially would not tolerate a pat yes or no, without an explanation of why.

I spend forty-nine days here with some of my favorite people. In that time, we have a carnival, dances, amusement parks, baseball games, outings and so many activities each day that I often lose track of what day it is. When I’m at camp what seems like 49 long days to someone at home feels like only short moments here. My day is filled with watching campers try new things, grow in confidence, laugh and smile, and gain independence. Yes, I also do nursing things, but even in the infirmary I can always find something each day that makes me smile and laugh.  Rarely have I ever experienced any place like it. When I go home, I think about all the faces I have grown to cherish over the summer before. I wonder how they are, and I hope they are well… I miss them… I miss camp.

Home is ten long months and camp is only two. The saying “living ten for two” doesn’t make sense unless you have lived it. I have, and now I do. So, every once in a while, I may wonder what I’m missing at home when I’m here, but then the next exciting thing happens and the thought blows away.

Oh! My little camper chirped as she smiled and skipped away. Me too, time for arts and crafts.

Yours in Camping,
