Camp Green Lane Blog Post August 7th
Tonight’s Blog Post is a Guest Write, written by Robin Stern Raskin.
And we are united once again. Warring has ended, we’re still friends. We are united once again. Friends forever… till the end. Friends forever… Camp Green Lane.
Sing that to the chorus of “Everything I Own” by Bread and you’ll have the 1991 White North Pole Friendship. The fact that I don’t know what I had for breakfast this morning, but can sing pretty much any Color War song, green or white, from my time at camp says both something about the mental decline I’ve experienced as I approach 50, and also about the lasting impact of Color War.
Whether this was your child’s first or eleventh Color War, there are aspects of this week that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Whether they had one line in the Campfire Skit. Or sang in harmony. Or made the winning shot in a cabin basketball game. Or chiseled names into a plank of wood. Or burned down a rope…. Whether they hugged a friend on the other team after a hard-fought game. Or made a new friend in another cabin. Or experienced Steeple Chase for the first time. Or painted their entire body green or white…. They will tell you that THIS was the best week of camp. This was the week they worked and played the hardest, sang and cheered the loudest, and laughed and cried the most(est). These are the memories that will stick with them forever.
They did their best all week long and then, after the winner was announced and the cheers and the tears had come and gone, they walked across the Globe and hugged their friends on the other team because white or green didn’t matter anymore. They grabbed a canteen treat and headed back to the bunk to debrief an incredible week with their favorite people. Because the warring had ended, and they would be friends forever.
Thanks for another great Color War week, Camp Green Lane!
