Camp Green Lane 100th Summer Blog Post, June 28th
“Mum, I had the best day!”
I was walking through the Circle last night and overheard a counselor on the phone. At 10 each night, staff who aren’t on duty with the kids can check their phones out of the counselor lounge in the Canteen. Last night was their first chance to check since the kids arrived Friday morning, and I promise I was not eavesdropping. But it was impossible to ignore the happiness emitting like a glow stick from that phone call in the dark.
A lot of us had the best day yesterday. Again today. And I’d put money on it happening again tomorrow. Some of us have achieved our summer flow state already, finding our comfortable routines and places and people around camp. Even though we’re only 48 hours into CGL 2026, it feels like we’ve been here longer. Everything is just so comfortable already, and that’s a good sign of a great summer to come.
Today was Anyday on the schedule, so boys started the day with Elective and girls went to Clinic.
Clinics are sports instruction periods, while Electives are non instruction choice periods made up of all of our non-athletic activities. The campers pick either a new one or the same each week. Electives and Clinic are CGL schedule staples, as well as Leagues, a draft-based athletics competition the kids carry through the summer. Instructional Swim is another staple, but new this summer we have a STEAM activity that was already the buzz by the pool at Free Swim. They made purple slime!
It’s Sunday where you are out there, which means we had bagels and fish for lunch here. If you’re from New York, it’s the same as appetizing. For breakfast, we had eggs and for dinner, we’re having lasagna. Afterwards, it will be Boys’ Canteen. Aunt Jamie made an executive decision yesterday to open the season with Girls’ Canteen, based on lightly controversial logic that the boys opened last summer. (Some of us on the boys side believe it should have been decided by a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors like last summer. LOL.)
Later on for Evening Activity, Senior Boys are going Bowling for the first trip of the summer. Inter Girls are playing Name Bingo, Inter Boys are headed to the Dome for dodgeball; Cadets are holding a Counselor Hunt, Debs will find out Who’s Got It; Senior Girls are having a Sing Down and the Greeks are drafting their Leagues teams.
We had fun today. Some people had the best day.
My mom is reading in New Jersey, so if you’ll indulge me:
I had a pretty good day today, too, mum.
