We’ll sleep when we’re home.
Sorry not sorry.
But we’re busy here. Busy making memories. Busy burning the Midnight oil to wring every last moment of Summer 2025 out of this camping season. So we wake up early, as you read about yesterday, and we stay up late, which is where the seeds for today’s story were found.
More specifically, it was in the Circle. It was well after curfew. And I found myself in the middle of a collision of CGL late-summer traditions.
But first, we believe last night was the 30th running of Midnight Madness, a surprise, late-night basketball, brackets and pizza party for the Senior Boys. Similar to when they slept in swimsuits awaiting their Inter Boy Polar Plunges, Senior Boys sometimes sleep in their basketball shoes hoping Midnight Madness will break. Last night it did—at exactly midnight—and they headed out to the Dome for what’s become a legendary 3-on-3 tournament.
Last night we had the first-ever, to my knowledge, back-to-back winners when Drew, Parker and Ari outlasted the field. It’s a great, late night of camp camaraderie. One of the coolest parts for me is having former Senior Boys, who are now counselors, come out to visit the games. This year, we put the names of former winners on the walls of the Dome and the event, after all this time, has taken on the feel of a fraternity. The passing on of traditions from old to young is a foundation of a CGL summer, and Midnight Madness is just one of many.
So I was out late.
And there I was, walking out to the Dome when I saw another CGL tradition happening under the cover of darkness.
A few years ago, the Inter Girls started capping their summer by going on a supervised Canteen raid late at night. Last night, as the oldest boys played basketball, the youngest girls “broke in” to the Canteen with Aunt Rachel and Aunt Melissa and had the most memorable late-night snack those little girls ever experienced.
We were up late, but there was still lots going on today. There was Clash Lunch and it’s Birthday Meal Dinner, when everyone gets to celebrate their birthday in camp. Today was also Choice/Challenge Day, where cabins were able to customize a 4-period schedule.
And tonight is Awards Night, when we’ll start reflecting on an incredible Summer 2025.
This time tomorrow, all the trunks will be packed. Yikes.
So that’s why we’re busy. Time’s ticking.
We had weeks. Then days. And now only hours remain.
We’ll sleep when we’re home.
