They’re cleaning watermelon off of BB1.

The teams are in their respective swim-rally rotations, and the only thing left to do after a week of Camp Green Lane Color War is sing.

The White Heroes and Green Gods have waged the closest of Color Wars and today’s Steeplechase was another collision of sportsmanship and tradition and determination that ended in one of the closest races we can remember.

Green got off to the early start but White kept on coming. By the time Logan and Jason got ready for the crucial football throw, the race was just about even. Seconds apart. The stuff of nightmares, the annual football throw can make or break the race. One too many misses can cost your team and they know it. The boys were practicing all morning and when it was time to throw a football through a tire hanging from the basketball hoop, they both hit it.

On their first shot.

The image of their teams swallowing them up in giant hugs will probably be on the Banquet video next week. Beautiful.

It was another one of those Color War days where these kids laid it all on the line. I saw tears when they lost Tugs of War and wild embraces when Jaxson hit a three on his first try during Steeplechase. They’ve been working on their guitars and  filling in harmony for the songs tonight all week at the picnic tables and the pagoda outside my cabin. They pour every bit of themselves into this week, painted in green and white, no matter how big or small their part’s been.

Today was a special day. It’s a CGL holiday. A day of psyche-ups and walk-outs. This afternoon was Steeplechase, an all-hands relay race through camp that started with Captains Ellie and Brianna eating a big bowl of pudding and ended with Captains Andrew and Jacob devouring a watermelon half. In between, kids ran and sweat and steadied their nerves for foul shots and layups and tennis serves and hockey shots and of course, those two titanic football throws on BB1.

But now they’re cleaning up the watermelon. The pudding is mopped up.

Soon, we’ll all be in the GLOBE.

And the only thing left to do is sing.

The score going into tonight’s Color War Sing is Green Gods with 3,734 points and White Heroes with 3,713  The winner of the Sing will win 2025 Camp Green Lane Color War.
