Camp Green Lane Blog Post July 11th
Do you remember seeing your favorite sport for the first time?
We have vivid memories of attending our first baseball games or sporting events, but do you remember the first time you fell in love with a sport or activity, when you saw or played it for the very first time?
Kids come to camp with all kinds of skills and interests, and one of the coolest parts of a Camp Green Lane summer is all the things your kids will learn and teach others while they’re here. Every day I see kids who’ve brought their passions with them to camp in the form of golf clubs, lacrosse sticks and even fishing rods. Every day, I see kids share those passions with their friends; I also see kids discover new passions for themselves.
I found the sport of lacrosse here at camp and my love affair with the game’s gone on for decades. I credit a counselor, Andrew Sherman, wherever you are, for putting a stick in my hands for the first time as a Senior Boy during the magical downtime between scheduled activities.
Today, the story comes full circle. Every summer I get to host Lacrosse Camp-Within-a-Camp and I get to share a little bit of my passion with a big group of kids. Like all of our camps-within-a-camp, kids sign up for several reasons. They may want more intensive instruction. They may want to polish their budding skills. Or in the case of the littlest campers I met today, they may just have an interest in trying something new.
So we gathered by Softball 2, down by the lake this morning at the start of First Period. Everyone got a sticker with their name. Some even smeared eye black on their faces to look tough before we got after it. We worked on passing, catching, picking up ground balls, offense, defense, and at the end, they got to scrimmage and fire away at the targets in the net and me in some goalie pads.
Throughout the summer, we’ll host all kinds of camps-within-a-camp, from basketball this week to cooking later in the summer and everything in between.
The instructors will all share their passions with your children on the fields, courts and in the kitchen.
And more than likely, at an activity or a clinic or an elective or maybe even a quiet moment between activities on the schedule at some point this summer, someone will discover a new passion here at camp.
Just like I did many years ago.
