Camp Green Lane Blog Post July 12th
The 15-16 year old Campers went to Lake Placid this past week for their annual Greek Trip. A few of them decided to write today’s blog and tell you about their experience.
For this year’s trip, the Greeks took on and conquered Lake Placid. Rising early for our seven-hour bus ride, we loaded the bus with snacks and sweats in hand. Halfway through the ride, we paused at a rest stop to reset and grab lunch.
Upon arrival at High Peaks resort, we were given free time to explore the hotel, streets, views, and shops. There was a variety of diverse cuisines to choose from for meals, such as: Italian, American, Chinese, Tex-Mex, and Greek. It was absolutely delicious and a refreshing break from camp food.
Later that night, we headed over to the Olympic Skating rink where the Miracle on Ice took place in 1980. It was an insane feeling to be standing in the middle of a rink where such captivating history occurred, and it was even cooler having the chance to skate on it too. We ended the evening with a rejuvenating night of sleep in the cushiest hotel beds.
Day two began at 7:30 am with none other than famous New York bagels. We hopped back on the bus and slept all through our ride to the Ausable Chasm adventure course. Here, we harnessed in and learned how to efficiently clip and unclip our carabiners (DON’T DOUBLE UNCLIP), we then took on the ropes. It was surreal to walk over water and be able to experience the breathtaking sights of rapid rivers and Mother Nature’s cliffs. For lunch, they provided us with a barbecue consisting of hot dogs, hamburgers, and pink lemonade.
Five minutes down the road, we were able to jump right into kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards at the local lake. It was relaxing to be out in such scenic water, and it was a perfect way to cool down after the adventure course. Following our lake excursion, we made s’mores on a homemade campfire, built by some of our past camper captains alongside the rental owners.
Once we got back from our day’s activities, we were provided with additional free time. Some us swam in the pool while others were able to shower, shop, and bond with one another. After another round of good food for dinner around town, everyone reconvened in the lobby to walk over to the 1932 Olympic Rink. There, we partook in a few playful rounds of curling. It was interesting to learn the ropes of such a unique sport.
We had a sweet end to the night by finishing off with ice cream from a local ice cream parlor. It had tons of fun, exotic flavors like mango dragon fruit, mint cookie crunch, brownie cookie sundae, and Boston cream dream.
On our final morning, we were able to sleep in a little before packing up to leave the resort at 9:30 am. After a nourishing breakfast, we took a drive to Lake Placid’s Olympic Jumping Complex, where multiple past Olympics have occurred. On our tour, we took a gondola ride to the top of the ski slopes, where fascinating views were displayed along the mountains. Our next stop was Mount Van Hoevenberg (MVH), where we learned about the in-depth training and quirks of many different Olympic Sliding sports.
It was overall an AMAZING trip, and we feel so lucky to have had this opportunity. We are incredibly grateful for the many memories we made and can’t wait to continue making more the rest of the summer.
