Camp Green Lane Blog Post July 2nd
Today was a picture-perfect camp day.
But as beautiful as the summer sights were under clear blue skies, today I want to focus on the sounds of a Camp Green Lane day. Because today you could hear all kinds of magical things happening across camp, from cheers to conversations, to simple sing-alongs between our Sayday activities.
Today was Opening Day for many division’s Leagues, so one thing you heard in the morning when the boys kicked off their season and then again in the afternoon when the Senior Girls started play on BB1, some kids took it upon themselves to sing the National Anthem, complete with a “Play ball!” to get things started in style. Well done, girls!
You heard plenty of bouncing balls around camp and squeaking Cadet Boy sneakers on BB1. Walking into the Dining Hall, there were “We want burgers!” chants from the Inter Boys in anticipation of today’s lunch. Inside the Dining Hall, the kids have been learning their cheers and it’s as loud as ever in there.
The girls of Regency circled up around the table in Cooking to bake cookies during fourth period; while they waited for their treats to bake, they clapped and sang and laughed, all of which you could hear from the next room.
Just outside, the soundtrack featured sounds of Inter Girls playing Ping-Pong in the shade; the crack of the Senior Boys’ wiffle ball bats; the Deb Girls smacking hockey balls around by the Dome; the Greeks blowing whistles and making all the right calls as refs for the little ones.
Camp is a symphony of summer sounds; sports and games and laughter and the simplest, deepest, most interesting conversations you’ve ever heard (Which counselor do you think can jump the highest? What’s the Iron Pigs game going to be like tomorrow?).

- I don’t know, but we’ll have to find out.
- Amazing! Try the corn.
Today was a picture-perfect camp day, but I kept going back to the sounds because I came to realize the sounds of camp are different than the sounds of home. For example, at home, we’re always telling the kids to turn down their devices. The YouTube and the video games and the TikToks can be a little much. Turn that iPad down. Put that dang phone away.
Here at camp, we’re free of those distractions. So we turn it up. The music. The laughter. The conversations, which frankly, I don’t see and hear at home.
So today was a beautiful day.
It looked beautiful. But man, did it sound wonderful.
