Camp Green Lane Blog Post July 6th

Tonight is a night for creativity.

A Camp Green Lane summer has got plenty of athletics, plenty of competition on our fields and courts all day and all night. There are literally basketballs bouncing late into the night. But our schedule also has plenty of room for the creative minds around camp—Arts & Crafts is always bustling during chosen activity time like Free Play and Elective.

Just yesterday, I walked into the Arts Center and found the White Sox, 11-year-old boys, making robot suits out of a pile of cardboard boxes they found. I know the White Sox well, and I think it’s cool when they set up their iPads at home and do art projects together across multiple states. Here, they can all get around the same table and turn Arts & Crafts into their own idea factory. Sometimes I worry that kids aren’t as creative now as we were way back when, and then I’ll find boys in robot suits running into each other on the softball field.

Throughout the summer, there are many special events that call for creativity here, from scripted skits to songwriting. Tonight is one of them when we stage the annual Carnival Lip Sync Contest. We’ll all pack the GLOBE for a show that will feature every bunk and every camper in camp. Each boys’ bunk is matched with a cabin on the girls’ side, pairing some of the biggest kids in camp with some of the littlest.

Tennessee and the White Sox are defending champions. Last summer, they did a Little Mermaid performance and there’s much anticipation for this summer’s act. They were looking for a pink shirt for their act earlier. This year, the theme is Broadway Ballads, so we’re all looking forward to a show featuring all the best musical numbers.

All of this is in preparation for tomorrow’s Carnival, the single-most fun day of the summer. I’ll tell you more about rides and water ice and soft pretzels tomorrow. I even have a special outfit for the day.

But tonight is all about the Lip Sync Contest.

And tonight is all about creativity.
