Camp Green Lane Blog Post July 7th
Today was Carnival.
I like to call it the single-most fun day of the summer. We have lots of great events across a Green Lane summer, but no single day packs as much fun into it as Carnival does.
The fun really started last night. Last we left off, we were preparing for the annual Lip Sync Contest. Last night’s show was incredible from start to finish. The “Broadway Ballads” theme brought out some of the best in our campers and counselors, who performed choreographed dance numbers, created amazing costumes and lit up the GLOBE stage with their wide eyes and big smiles.
At the end of the night, the Gamma/Cubs rendition of “The Greatest Showman” was voted best in show.
The winners were announced at today’s breakfast (eggs and croissants). From there, we headed back to the cabins for super-cleanup and then decorated the Stein Dome for Carnival.
After pizza lunch, we took to Cadet Lawn where the inflatables stood; the pool was jammed with blow-up obstacles, and the line to dunk the group leaders stretched all the way up to beach volleyball.
Music pumped out of the Dome. We lined up inside for Rita’s Water Ice, Philly soft pretzels, popcorn and cotton candy. There was a prize booth, a photo booth and Western Union was busy sending handwritten notes to friends across camp just like old times. The booths were as cute as ever with the little Orioles offering opinions and Hershey’s wheel of surprises. There were toilet paper tosses and marshmallow throws; water fights broke out, faces were painted and we ate barrels of water ice in a scene that hasn’t changed much in a generation.
The floor was sticky and there was confetti everywhere; fun was clearly had here.
Tonight, tradition continues with Chef Justin’s BBQ chicken dinner and then our first dance of the summer—the Carnival Dance, where we’ll learn who this year’s Carnival King and Queen are.
Not bad for a Monday. A Carnival. Rides. Water ice. Pretzels. Barbeque. And a dance party.
Like I said, the single-most fun day of the summer.
Carnival rules.
