Camp Green Lane Blog Post June 24th
Today was our first “real” camp day.
We were also treated to some of the most magnificent summer weather we can remember. Temperatures were mild and the most pleasant breeze made its way through camp all day. It was a picture-perfect day to get going as a camp.
Yesterday was all about arrivals and getting acquainted with both new and old friends and new surroundings. Today was all about getting out to activities and starting to play all the amazing games we have here at Camp Green Lane.
We had hash browns and eggs for breakfast and following our morning cleanup, we headed out to morning activities. Today campers learned all about Clinic and Electives, which are alternating periods on the schedule every other day. Campers receive more personalized instruction and coaching in the sport of their choice for Clinic, while Electives are more lower impact or bend towards the arts, such as Cooking, Arts and Crafts, Drama, Frisbee Golf and High Ropes.
Another big component of the first full day of camp is getting organized for Leagues, when counselor coaches draft teams of campers from their divisions and compete in sports and games all summer long. League winners get a pizza party at the end of the summer.
The Senior Boys held their Leagues Combine in the Stein Dome this morning, which is always a highlight to watch the boys run through a series of wacky “tests of strength, endurance and intelligence.” Boys shot basketballs through waving pool noodles to see who’s cool under pressure, as an example, and a record number of campers aced the NFL-style Wonderlic Exam questions curated for the boys. The Draft will be held later this week.
Tonight we’ll have Free Play after dinner and we’ll break off into divisional evening activities. That means Inter Boys will play Meet Your Match, Inter Girls are playing Name Bingo, Cadet Boys will try to Beat the Pro, Deb Girls have a Sing Down, Senior Boys will Capture the Flag and watch Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, Senior Girls will play Send Me, and the Greeks will be in the Globe.
There was a lot going on today, there’s a lot going on tonight, and just like that, Camp Green Lane is in full summer bloom.
