Good evening, Camp Green Lane Nation!

Welcome back! The. Blog. Is. Live!

What is this blog, exactly?

Great question.

For the next 7 weeks, this blog will be your daily dose of news and information from between the Arches.

Hello to all the Moms and Dads and Aunts and Uncles and Grandmas and Pop-Pops and the Bubbies and Zaydas and all of you out there who have a piece of your heart here at Camp Green Lane.

I’m Uncle Evan, and for most of the day and the night, I’m the senior Boys Supervisor. But for a moment each day, I have the opportunity to reflect, report and explain to all of you out there all the news that’s fit to print each camping afternoon.

We’ll break down all the big activities and trips all summer, we’ll take you inside the Dining Hall—yes, it’s air-conditioned now, and it’s amazing, especially these last few days!—we’ll go behind the scenes of your favorite camp events, and we’ll try to help you experience the magic of a Camp Green Lane summer.

So let’s get to it.

We’ve been here since Saturday afternoon. This is Orientation Week for the staff and during this time, our counselors come together to prepare for the best summer of their lives. We give them lots of lessons and tons of tools to do their jobs. We show them and tell them how to be exceptional counselors and we often speak about the massive responsibility that comes with. “It’s fun, but it’s a job,” is one of the themes of the week.

So what makes an exceptional counselor?

It starts with heart.

For the next 7 weeks, these counselors will have an opportunity to engage with your children and they will leave life-long impressions on them. Your children will also leave them with indelible memories. In my experience, the best counselors are the ones who care most, who engage most and who support their campers the most with love and compassion.

After watching the current group of staff operate, I can tell you your children will be in fantastic hands. They have shown they care about each other, they’re down for a great time, and they are willing and ready to put themselves out there in support of others. We’ve already had spontaneous sing-alongs, dance parties and this afternoon, the Kona Ice truck was here to cool us off.

This week is all about getting ready for the children to arrive. Lining fields, unpacking bags, learning a new vocabulary that includes words like “Canteen” and “The GLOBE.”

And it is about anticipation of what’s to come.

So, how do you prepare for the best summer of your life?

First, find yourself some exceptional counselors.

Check.

Next, fill your heart with love.

Check.

As for the rest? We’ll get to it as it comes.

And trust me, there will be plenty of it. Each. And. Every. Day.

See you tomorrow.
