Camp Green Lane Blog Post October 2nd
Hello all, and Happy October from Between the Arches!
We can’t believe that Autumn is upon us when it feels like just yesterday that the buses were rolling into the Circle to start the summer. In the seven weeks since camp ended, much has changed. The trees are turning vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow rather than the emerald green we saw throughout the summer. The fields, courts, and cabins are quiet instead of filled with the cheers, songs, and laughter we love hearing. The balls, racquets, whistles, gimp/lanyard, paddle boards and the like have all been stored away, waiting to be taken out again next summer.
Speaking of change, one thing we never tire of hearing from our families is how much their children have changed for the better when they come home from camp. Things like…. They are putting away their own laundry. They have been more patient with their siblings. They help clean up after meals. They are trying foods and/or activities that they never would have tried before. While we know that many of these changes come naturally with age (and with excellent parenting), we like to think that a summer of independence at camp helps along the way.
For our youngest campers, this may be the first time they are making their way without an assist from their parents. It may seem simple, but picking out their own clothes for the dance and choosing how to spend their Free Play is them asserting themselves in the world. “This is my style and these are my interests.” Very cool! Our older campers are able to unplug from the technology they have so come to rely on, and spend that time developing the deepest and most enduring friendships. That time away from the screen, being in nature, connecting with people… it rewires the brain in the best possible way. It reminds them (and us) that life is better lived face-to-face and hand-in-hand with friends.
Enjoy your pumpkin-spiced everything and we’ll see you back here in a few weeks!
